An interactive map of the risks facing humanity this century — and the multilateral governance meant to hold them.
This dashboard visualises 17 named global catastrophic and existential risks (plus a residual "unknown" category) grouped into five families: Natural, Technological, Environmental, Geopolitical / societal, and Unknown. The term "global catastrophic and existential risks" follows the UN Pact for the Future (2024).
Risks mode shows each risk coloured by category, with compact meters for likelihood (probability of reaching global-catastrophic scale this century) and impact (severity ceiling, from Severe to Existential). Because a risk's severity and probability are inversely related, each is a range: the meter's solid dots are the most-likely ("modal") outcome and the hollow dots mark the lower-probability worst-case "tail". Click a risk to centre it and reveal its interconnections.
Governance mode re-codes each risk by how well it is governed by multilateral mechanisms — Robust, Developing, Weak, or Minimal — and clicking a risk shows the treaties and agencies that exist, how binding and effective they are, and the primary gap.
Likelihood and impact are relative, range-based expert judgments under deep uncertainty, not forecasts — intended for comparison across risks, not prediction. Full methodology, sources and confidence ratings are in MasterList.md and GovernanceMapping.md. Data reflects analysis as of July 2026.
